Great Scott!

Denise Scott might have a pooch or two in her purse at next year’s Logies.

This month John and I appeared on Network 10’s The Dog House Australia Celebrity Special, a show where you apply to adopt a rescue dog and, if a match is found, you travel to Kempsey Creek Animal Shelter to meet your potential forever pet. The scary part? The first time you clap eyes on one another, it’s filmed and broadcast on national TV. Think Married At First Sight for pups and ‘pawrents’.

John and I were terrified! What if the dog was ugly? Out of control? Unlovable? What if we hated it? Or it hated us? Oh god, what if we had to say no to an abandoned dog on national television? The thought made my body burn with shame. For sure I’d never be asked to the Logies again!

At the shelter, we sat in the reception area where secret cameras filmed us from every angle. What a time to have three chins! We were introduced to Nic and Tayla. They asked me what sort of dog I was looking for. I told them. Tayla responded: “Sorry Denise, we don’t have any sixweek-old cavoodle puppies, but we do have two small dogs – Lambkins and Yoga.” So far so good … “However, there is a problem. They were dumped at the Dubbo pound the same night and have bonded ever since. We tried to separate them but they became depressed.” I heard a sob. It was John.

And so we found ourselves waiting in the outdoor compound, facing the possibility of now having to reject not one but two dogs on national TV.

The door opened. Lambkins and Yoga bounded towards us. Our hearts soared. We were smitten.

It was indeed love at first sight. See you at the Logies!
