Security forces act to put airport out of bounds

The Australian - - FRONT PAGE - PAUL GARVEY HONG KONG

Hong Kong authorities moved to restrict access to the city’s airport last night in a bid to defuse the tensions that have spilled over into violence and caused massive disruption in recent days.

Tough new security measures introduced at the airport late yesterday ensured that the number of protesters was well down on previous nights as authorities worked to avoid a third consecutive day of brawling and flight cancellations.

Protest leaders apologised for the disruptions yesterday as they tried to reverse a shift in public sentiment against the movement.
