Taverna closes its doors

THE home of one of the longest- established Greek restaurants in Cairns is for sale.

The Adelfia Greek Taverna closed at the weekend and the building on the corner of Aplin and Grafton streets will be sold by auction on July 11.

Marketing agent Danny Betros said the corner site iconic building had been a restaurant for more than 40 years.

“It’s been a restaurant since I came here in the mid- 80s,” he said.

The restaurant has been operated by Steven and Fiona Harris.

They could not be contacted yesterday but a message on the restaurant’s answering service said: “Unfortunately due to the building being sold we are no longer trading.”

Mr Betros said he doubted it would reopen as a restaurant.

“We think its best use is being converted into offices or for medical purposes,” he said.

Mr Betros said there was on-site car parking and it was in a good location. “We see its future as not a restaurant. It could reopen as a restaurant but we believe there are alternate uses,” he said.

Mr Betros said future uses were varied, including retail, commercial offices, a real estate agency, employment agency, hair and beauty, finance, technology and legal and accounting.

“There has been quite a bit of interest,” he said.

Mr Betros said the local family who owned the building wanted to get out of the property.

It covers 402sq m with 20m of frontages on both Aplin and Grafton streets.

The ground floor is 161sq m and the first floor is a three bedroom residence of 144sq m with 130sq m of “sleep- out” verandas.

It last sold for $ 515,000 in 2001 and it is zoned city centre and commercial. Rates are $11,500 a year.

The auction is on site on July 11 at noon.
