Fury over federal funding of Mackay CBD upgrade

- Liam Parsons liam.parsons@news.com.au

THE Federal Government funding $ 9 million for an upgrade of Mackay’s CBD is a slap in the face for local residents who are still awaiting a much-needed revamp of their tired city centre, Cairns MP Gavin King said.

But the Federal Government said the funding for Mackay was highlighted as a priority by its local Regional Development Australia branch – while the Cairns upgrade was knocked back by its local RDA committee.

Cairns Regional Council sought almost $ 5 million towards upgrading Shields and Lake streets under the RDA program, but it was declined in February.

An upgrade of the Hann Highway, a weather radar service and an upgrade of the Mareeba Airport – which was later pulled – were chosen instead as the three priorities to be put forward for a share in the federal funding.

Mr King said he was furious Mackay had received the money while Cairns was still no closer to a new city centre, with the G20 finance meeting fast-approaching.

‘‘ We need that money urgently,’’ he said. ‘‘The Federal Government huffed and puffed when I dared suggest they chip in for our CBD but now they have announced $9 million for Mackay.’’

Cairns-based Senator Jan McLucas said the RDA system was established to have a community-focus while keeping interest groups at an arms’ length.

‘‘ Mackay went through exactly the same process but their local committee prioritised it as a project they wanted,’’ she said.

Senator McLucas said that she had spoken to the chair of the local RDA and had been told the CBD upgrade was not off the table.

But Mr King has called on the Federal Government to match the state’s $5 million contribution to the project.
