Nets, gaffs must be the right size

-

MANY fish are lost at the boat when attempting to lift them from the water. Large fish, unless hooked well, should either be gaffed or netted to bring on board. Obviously if you plan to release a fish it is best done in the water if possible, or gently in a landing net. A common mistake many anglers make in selecting a gaff or landing net is size. A mackerel gaff that has a hook too large will often go around the fish. Landing nets that are too small will cause problems, like the hooks snagging on the outside of the net, especially if lure fishing. When targeting barramundi it is wise to have a large landing net to ensure your prized catch is not lost at the boat. I have seen numerous big barras lost by small landing nets that are inappropriate for the job.
