Billy upset by domestic violence MP in white ribbon push
EMBATTLED MP Billy Gordon says he wants to help combat the “scourge” of domestic violence, as he awaits the outcome of an investigation into allegations against him.
The independent member for the Far North Queensland seat of Cook, has this week worn a white ribbon for violence awareness in Parliament.
Yesterday he said he expected to be exonerated of the domestic violence allegations levelled against him by his former partners.
He also said he had not been interviewed by police in relation to the investigation.
“I support the Premier’s stand against domestic viol- ence,” Mr Gordon said yesterday. “I support the Parliament’s stand, it’s a very timely issue.
“I have not been charged on a domestic violence crime and I stand with my colleagues … against this scourge in our society.”
When asked how he felt when he heard the allegations made against him by his former partners, Mr Gordon said he felt “pretty aggrieved”.
“But I put my faith in the Queensland Police Service on my innocence and I tried to move on with dignity,” he said.
He said he hoped to hold a press conference in the “nottoo-distant future” to address the issue.
Mr Gordon, maintaining his innocence, said he had “co-operated fully with police” and was “quite happy with the process”.
Earlier this year, police confirmed they had completed their investigation and were seeking legal advice.
“I’m just like you guys, waiting with bated breath for some finality to this … The report will be made public,” he said.
Police Commissioner Ian Stewart has called for a cut to red tape hampering the fight against domestic violence.
He wants changes to speed up the issuing of restraining orders.
