Game on for sports fans

- – Editor Jennifer Spilsbury

I, LIKE many Queenslanders, am a sports tragic. It’s not like I know every stat or the middle name of every sporting hero, I just like sport.

I’ve been wielding a golf stick since I was 12 – yes, for a long time and no, not at cane toads.

So it has been thrilling to watch our Aussie golfers shine in the past couple of years. Most recently Jason Thanks Day has provided much to cheer about and has gone a “fairway” to proving he’s the real deal. It was nailbiting stuff there for a while last week to see if he would back up his world No.1 ranking with a tidy $16 million payday in the FedEx Cup. But it wasn’t to be. Doesn’t matter. He’s an Aussie champion just the same. But my sports loving isn’t just contained to that most noble of games. I’m the proud owner of a Cowboys jersey and along with my husband, Matt, we’ve been propped up in front of a TV screen all winter cheering on our beloved Cows.

It’s been a bumpy ride being a Cowboys fan for the past 20 years.

Tender years, lean years, grand final charges and grand final heartaches. Hyped-up offseasons, promising starts, demoralising noshows and ruinous ref calls. Zippy fullbacks, gritty props and heavenly halfbacks.

But that’s what being a fan is all about. Thick and thin.

Mind you, I feel like I’ve got an each-way bet this weekend. I love the Broncs too.

But why blow the whistle there. The AFL grand final is there too with a pinch of Rugby World Cup.

It all comes on top of our local sports grand finals and the Australian Men’s Masters Hockey Championships. Oh what a great time to be a sports lover. Lap it up.
