THE Far North’s largest gym brand Genesis has opened a new centre at Westcourt and will create a central group fitness venue nearby.

Manager and director Prue Kellahan said she was pleased that finally the replacement sites for Stockland had been secured.

Genesis Stockland closed more than six months ago and the owners had been searching for suitable buildings to lease.

Ms Kellahan said Genesis Stockland had been split into a strength and resistance club and a “Group Fitness Mecca”.

She said the 24/7 Genesis Fitness 318 had opened in the former Sportscene store next to Spotlight at 318 Mulgrave Rd while early in the new year Group Fitness Mecca with a creche would replace a 24/7 centre at the Showgrounds Shopping Centre club.

“We had our heart set on remaining in the area and there were a few disappointing days,” Ms Kellahan said.

“But we now have the site that we’ve wanted. It’s central … both venues are easily accessed from all suburbs. All roads lead to them.

“The Westcourt club will be filled with cardio, pin loaded, free weights and functional training equipment.”

Ms Kellahan said a longterm lease had been signed for 318 Mulgrave Rd and a “substantial” investment had been made in the venue with the landlord fitting out the building over the past two months. Keir Queensland was the main contractor.

“It’s our most modern gym,” she said.

Individual private unisex showers and changing cubicles are included.

“We think people prefer more privacy,” Ms Kellahan said. “Group Fitness Mecca will be our biggest group fitness room yet.”

She said work had started on transforming the showgrounds centre and the aim was to open early next month for group fitness classes.

“The women will love it. It’s easy to get to and there’s good parking at both centres,” Ms Kellahan said.

Due to demand a boot camp and a creche will remain at Genesis Fitness Southside.

Ms Kellahan said next year the plan was to make the Lake St CBD and Redlynch gyms 24/7 as well.

Genesis is offering a special “318 construction offer” of $299 for six months, also available to current members of all centres. Take up the offer by December 31 and membership is extended to July 31 next year.
