Quiet cousins in spotlight

Suncorp Stadium debut for talented pair FNQ LAWN BOWLS

- RHYS O’NEILL

FOOTY’S brightest lights will shine on two Far North juniors in 2016, as Tiko Twist and Treavon Mcginness run out in the curtain-raiser to the NRL All Stars.

The 15-year-olds will line up for the indigenous Murri side to meet Koori in a Queensland versus NSW under-16 showdown dubbed a mini State of Origin.

Played before the blockbuster NRL season opener at Suncorp Stadium, the game provides a rare slice of the limelight for the quiet Cairns pair.

Both speedy outside backs who are already on the books of Easts Tigers, Twist plays for Kangaroos in the CDJRL and cousin Mcginness lines up for rivals Edmonton.

“I get a bit nervous thinking about it but playing footy is the dream,” Twist said of the Suncorp Stadium match.

“I’m sure it will be really fast and a step up from here.”

Mum Altovise Twist knows just how big an opportunity is being presented to the pair.

“There’s a lot of skill with these Cairns kids but you have to have the finances to get them around,” she said.

“It’s really hard to get seen if you can’t get them to the scouts and some fade into the background.

“That (the NRL curtainraiser) is a chance to be seen again.” Tuesday December 15: winner G Bew/P Morris/G Cornwell. Wednesday December 16: winner C Leinster/R Smith/R Palin. The duo was chosen in the Murri side after star performances at the Arthur Beetson Carnival in Brisbane in October.

Playing for the Leaf Bennetcoached Waa’Wid’jee’Mah Warriors, Twist and Mcginness outpointed southern rivals to earn spots in the squad.

They then travelled to Fiji for two successful matches with local sides – and one heck of a cultural learning curve.

“It was great for our fitness and bonding,” Twist said.

“I think we played OK and it was good to be able to experience a different culture.

“We did some community stuff while we were there and it made me appreciate living in Australia.”
