Waterfall a great escape from holiday heat

- DOMINIC GEIGER

HOT and humid conditions meant the Hill family ditched plans to play card games indoors yesterday and headed to the cool waters of Crystal Cascades in Redlynch.

Rain and thunderstorms were forecast to affect the Far North, and while scattered showers were beginning to form late in the afternoon, Cairns Airport recorded no rain between 9am and 4pm.

Dad Andrew Hill said the cascades were the perfect spot for his young family to escape the heat, with Savannah, 11, Indiah, 9, and Marley, 4, having a blast splashing in the stream.

“It’s kid friendly, you can go further up (the cascades) but it’s not really suitable for kids their age,” he said.

The Hills, from Kewarra Beach, weren’t the only ones trying to cool down yesterday, with the popular Cairns swimming spot filled with families when the mercury hit a high point of 30.4 degrees at midday.

While expectations of a rain-soaked Christmas weekend failed to ring true, the weather bureau has predicted a high to very high chance of showers for the Far North coast until Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to hover between a minimum of 23 and a maximum of 31 during the week.

The movement of a low in the Gulf of Carpentaria which has brought flooding to parts of the Northern Territory remained “uncertain” yesterday.

The BOM’s website also said the low was “forecast to take on a more eastwards path over the next few days, possibly skirting the Gulf of Carpentaria coast before taking on a more southward track over land from late Tuesday or Wednesday”.
