Roar ruin City’s streak

- MARCO MONTEVERDE

BRISBANE Roar chalked up a hat-trick of victories for the first time this season, snapping Melbourne City’s four-game winning streak with a 3-1 triumph at Suncorp Stadium last night.

In front of their biggest home crowd of the season of 16,435, the second-placed Roar moved four points clear of City on the A-League ladder with their seventh win of the campaign.

The Roar lead 2-0 at halftime via a Patrick Kisnorbo own goal and a strike from the recalled Brandon Borrello.

City got themselves back into the game four minutes after halftime through their star striker Bruno Fornaroli, who became the fastest player in A-League history to reach 10 goals.

But City couldn’t find an equaliser, with the Roar finishing the stronger and scoring the match-sealer in stoppage time through substitute Henrique, who netted from distance after City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen went up the other end for a corner.

There was also some spice in the game, with tensions exploding soon after Fornaroli’s goal when the Roar took exception to Harry Novillo sticking his leg out to bring down Brisbane defender Jack Hingert.

A scuffle involving several players from both teams followed, with the result being referee Jarred Gillett issuing yellow cards to City pair Novillo and Paulo Retre, and Roar defenders Daniel Bowles and Jade North.

Earlier, Roar marquee man Thomas Broich had the first chance of the game in the eighth minute after City skipper Kisnorbo gave up possession cheaply.

However, Broich directed his shot straight at City gloveman Thomas Sorensen.

The Roar doubled their lead five minutes before halftime through Borrello who took advantage of a clever pass from Dimitri Petratos to fire home his fifth goal of the season with a shot that Sorensen should have saved at his near post.
