CAIRNS Esplanade’s New Year’s Eve entertainment and fireworks are set to explode on Thursday.

Acting Mayor Terry James said the event was an important part of the local festive season celebrations.

“There’ll be action down on the Western Events Lawn from 6pm, including live music from local and touring artists and the Doyle Family Fun Show for the younger ones,” Cr James said.

“The nearby Eastern Events Lawn will also feature inflatable slides, jumping castles and climbing walls.

“And, of course, a bit of rain won’t affect the two fireworks displays; one at 9pm and one at midnight which will conclude the events,” he said.

Residents are also reminded fireworks may upset pets so they must be kept safe and secure. Owners should ensure pets have an ID tag with current contact numbers; are secure inside, especially during fireworks and have favourite toys and a radio or TV playing to help keep them calm.

Council will also fund an extended bus service to help people get home safely from celebrations.

“This year, buses will operate from the Cairns City until 1.30am on New Year’s Day,” Cr James said.

Seven routes will operate in a one-way format, with services leaving the city just after midnight and at regular intervals until about 1.30am.

Council’s Lake St carpark will also be open for free from 7.30am on December 31 until 7.30pm on January 2.
