New Orleans band brings us brass with class
NOT every band has a survival story like Grammy-nominated group The Hot 8 Brass Band.
The New Orleans band will bring the spirit of its hometown to Cairns this week despite recently marking the 10th anniversary of the death of one of their instrumentalists, Dinerral Shavers.
Shavers was just one of four band members who passed away during the life of the band. Band leader Bennie Pete said every performance was a chance to pay respects to the band’s fallen members and celebrate the history of New Orleans jazz.
“Jazz and our New Orleans culture have a long history spanning back so many decades and generations,” he said.
He said the band had never travelled to Cairns before.
“We have new music and it will be a great opportunity to share our culture,” he said. The band will perform at 7.30pm on Friday at Tank 5 to kick off the Jazz Up North season. Tickets cost $36.75 for adults and $31.50 for concession card holders.
