Rebel’s cause to destruct

- MATT WINDLEY RUGBY UNION

EXPLOSIVE Melbourne Reforward Lopeti Timani says he has returned from Wallabies duty a more confident player.

But the 2016 international breakout star may have to play out of his preferred position for a little while yet, such are the injury woes that have afflicted the Rebels forward pack.

After a strong Super Rugby season, Timani was rewarded with a Test debut against Argentina in September.

He went on to receive five caps for the year and was especially impressive on the European spring tour, where his exploits at No.8 led many pundits to suggest the 26-year-old would remain a key part of Michael Cheika’s side right up to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Timani said his self-belief had grown immeasurably.

“I feel good about myself, about my rugby,” Timani said.

“Being with the Wallabies, it was a great experience, training with some great players, I learnt a lot about my game.

“Now I just want to make sure I have a great season with the Rebels and hopefully I can get back there again.”

With Sean McMahon (ankle), Dom Day (shoulder) and Sam Jeffries (ankle) all out last week, Rebels coach Tony McGahan played Timani at lock next to Steve Cummins.

While Japanese recruit Amanaki Mafi was impressive at No.8, offsetting Timani’s absence in the back row, both player and coach conceded the preference was for him to play at the back of the scrum.
