Windfall keeps up average

RAINTREES Newsagency may just be the ticket to getting rich quickly.

The quiet newsagency has sold three division one winning lottery tickets in the past three years, including a $1 million winning ticket on Wednesday.

Owner Mal Stokes said he was hoping for a fourth win this weekend.

“The last time we sold a division one winning ticket on a Wednesday we sold another winning ticket on Saturday,” he said.

“We’re really hoping history repeats itself.”

He said there was no better feeling than selling a winning ticket.

“We sell so many tickets and there are so many tickets bought across the country, so to be able to sell the one winning ticket is unbelievable, what a ripper of a win,” he said.

He said the winner of Wednesday night’s Gold Lotto, who wanted to remain anonymous, was a regular customer.

“He always comes in and buys a 12-game Quickpick, which is what he won with,” he said.

The winner is a Cairns man who was approaching retirement before he had the windfall.

The man said the win had given him the chance to retire earlier than expected, giving him time to spend with family.

“It’s well and truly come at absolutely the right time,” he said.

“I check my lotto online each morning and usually it says nothing to me.

“But this time it was different.

“I really didn’t believe it, but I believe it now.”

He plans to buy his first home, buy a new car and help his family with his win.
