Nursery site’s bright future

BECKONING retirement has opened up opportunities for developers to transform a sprawling White Rock site.

White Rock Nursery owners Carol and Leigh Ross have put their property on the market after buying the site for $300,000 in 1994.

The 15,900sq m site, at 8 Skull Rd, is zoned residential 2 with potential Cairns Regional Council approval for residential 3 zoning.

Twomey Schriber Property Group sales consultant John Pirie said it would be “business as normal” at the nursery until the land sold.

“Having a block this size come on the market so close to town with that access is fantastic,” Mr Pirie said.

“The way Cairns is looking and with everyone so positive, the smart guys are buying now.

“They can buy it and sit on it until everything picks up.”

Mr Pirie said, while the provision was there for units, he believed a 46-townhouse complex would better suit the site.

“With people downsizing and looking for something easier to manager, it would be ideal,” he said.

“If you cut that down to 300sq m blocks, you’re looking at a small community.”

The Skull Rd site is for sale through an expression of interest campaign, ending 5pm Thursday, June 29.

Mrs Ross said the past 23 years had been rewarding but she was now looking forward to “taking a holiday” with her husband.

“It really has been a wonderful place to bring up our three boys who had somewhere fantastic to play with their school friends every afternoon,” she said.

“All the amenities are here, and we are closer to town than people realise.”

Mrs Ross said selling the property was a decision not made lightly, but backed the site to be developed into an affordable residential hub.
