Visit our super markets

- DANIEL BATEMAN daniel.bateman@news.com.au

THE sun is shining and the days are cooler, making weekends the perfect opportunity to get out and about and peruse markets across the tropical North.

Nearly every major suburb and small town has its own local meet-up of stallholders, but there are some, in particular, that are really worth a visit.

Here are some of the best.

RUSTY’S MARKETS Where: Undercover, between Sheridan and Grafton streets, next to Gilligans When: Friday and Saturday, 5am to 6pm, and Sunday, 5am to 3pm Why it’s awesome: With more than 180 stalls featuring exotic fruit, vegetables and flowers, sumptuous delicatessens with fresh breads, diary and seafood, a host of international food and beverage stalls, you are guaranteed to find something you have never consumed before. HOLLOWAYS BEACH

MARKETS Where: The Esplanade, Holloways Beach When: Second Sunday of every month from 8am to 1pm Why it’s awesome: The only markets held on the beachfront in the Far North, the Holloways markets are an eclectic mix of stalls you are not likely to see at others across the region. Peruse everything from fresh honey through to tie-dye T-shirts, while taking your dog for a swim and a run. YUNGABURRA MARKETS Where: Bruce Jones Park, Yungaburra When: Fourth Saturday of each month, except December Why it’s awesome: One of the largest and oldest markets in the region, more than 320 regular stallholders meet in the historic village to sell fresh produce, flowers, homemade crafts, plants, books and even local wines. PORT DOUGLAS MARKETS Where: Market Park, Port Douglas When: Every Sunday Why it’s awesome: Although these markets are always swarming with tourists, they are popular for a good reason – they are the most picturesque in the tropics. Bordered by Dickson Inlet and Wharf St, those wandering the dozens of bustling stalls have a backdrop of mountain ranges and the Coral Sea. Add in the quirky goods and beautiful locally made artwork, and for any visitor to Port, this is a must.

TANKS MARKETS Where: Collins Ave, Edge Hill When: The last Sunday of every month from April to November Why it’s awesome: With a unique collection of fashions, artworks and handicrafts, these are among the grooviest markets in the region. Collins Ave comes alive with sounds and smells, as hundreds of people stroll down the shady street, admiring the many different goods on display. Pair a visit to the markets with a relaxing walk through the Cairns Botanic Gardens for a great day out.
