Stab trial jury begins deliberation

- JANESSA EKERT

A CAIRNS District Court jury in the trial against Storm Danyon Woods, who is accused of stabbing two people at a Mossman home last year, will resume deliberation this morning.

The court was told that Mitchell Robinson and his girlfriend Tiffanie Hansen were arguing at a Whyanbeel property on June 13 when Mr Woods intervened and as a result stabbed the pair.

He has denied his actions were deliberate, pleading not guilty to malicious act with intent and wounding charges.

Mr Woods has said he grabbed a knife and just held it and that Mr Robinson impaled himself during a scuffle.

During closing arguments defence barrister Peter Feeney said Mr Woods had been slammed into a kitchen cupboard by Mr Robinson.

“He simply took the knife and had it in his hand ... but did nothing with it,” Mr Feeney said. “It was in his hand while he was under attack.”

Mr Feeney said it was the uninvited attack from Mr Robinson that resulted in the consequences.

Crown prosecutor Gelma Meoli said Mr Woods almost killed Mr Robinson and in the process stabbed Ms Hansen.

She told the jury that it was common sense that if someone arms themselves with a knife bad things could happen. “The only issue for you to decide on is whether it’s unlawful,” Ms Meoli said.

The jury began deliberations at 2.47pm yesterday.
