Stabbing murder charge

A CAPE York man will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court this morning following the alleged stabbing murder of a woman.

The 29-year-old was charged yesterday morning after an incident at a Kowanyama home early Saturday morning.

Acting Cape Patrol Inspector Antoni Lesic said a neighbour had called police about 12.30am after hearing a disturbance at the Pindi St home. It is alleged that during an altercation the 35-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck.

“As a result of that incident a female person suffered an injury, which has resulted in her death,” Insp Lesic said.

She received medical treatment at the scene but passed away as a result of her injuries.

It is believed the couple were in a de facto relationship.

“A man was taken into custody at the scene by police,” Insp Lesic said.

Specialist investigators and forensic officers were flown to Kowanyama on Saturday to inspect the scene.

The Kowanyama community, which was still reeling from a number of tragedies over the past year, was in shock over the incident.

Earlier this year Kowanyama reached out over a need for more permanent health workers following a number of youth suicides.

And in October last year a man was charged with murder after a woman was killed and a number of people were injured after a vehicle crashed into a home where mourners had gathered to pay their respects.

“At this point the community appears calm and solemn,” Insp Lesic said.
