Hanson confident of impact in Far North

- HAYDEN SMITH AND ANDREA FALVO

ONE Nation leader Pauline Hanson insists her party can make serious inroads across all Far North electorates.

The controversial senator finally visited the Tropical North at the weekend, three weeks after the November 25 election was announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Flanked by her local candidates, Ms Hanson yesterday met and posed for photos with potential One Nation voters at Bunnings Smithfield.

“I believe all the candidates have a very good chance of winning their seats,” she said.

With the clock ticking until election day, Ms Hanson was looking to boost the profile of One Nation in the Far North.

Polling by the Cairns Post showed One Nation’s Cairns candidate Ian Hodge was tracking third behind Labor’s Michael Healy and LNP’s Sam Marino.

Ms Hanson yesterday said the public’s disengagement with the major political parties would drive more support to One Nation, including in Far North Queensland.

“They really are wanting change …. they are sick of the same old rhetoric and the same old promises,” she said.

“We haven’t gone out pork barrelling, saying we are going to give you this and give you that … people are fed up with it.

“It is a matter of reining in the budget plus doing very important Until the weekend, Ms Hanson’s absence from the Far North throughout the election campaign had raised some eyebrows – but she was adamant One Nation could make its mark in the region.

The outspoken Queensland Senator visited Mareeba and Mossman with One Nation candidate for Cook Jen Sackley on Saturday.

“I think that Jen Sackley has a very good chance of winning infrastructure projects.” Cook – (and) all the candidates have,” she said.

Ms Sackley said removing crocodiles across the Far North was a must.

“Cooya and Newell Beach are going to be dredged, pontoons will put in for people so they can safely get in and out of their boats without being attacked by crocodiles,” she said.

“Crocodiles will be removed there’ll be no doubt about that, I’m not negotiable about that.

“Human lives will always come first.” A NORTHERN Beaches community has called a town meeting to discuss a proposed boat ramp. A boat ramp at Yorkeys Knob, and an upgrade to the boat ramp at Newell Beach are part of a $9.5 million election promise if Labor wins and will come under the Marine Infrastructure Fund. Trinity Beach resident Marilyn Wallace said there had been no community consultation about the planned boat ramp. She said a meeting would be held from 7pm tonight at the Yorkeys Knob community hall to discuss the proposed plans. THE Marlin Coast Men’s Shed is slated to be expanded with $100,000 from an elected LNP Government. LNP candidate for Barron River, Michael Trout, said it was an investment into a community facility with a fastgrowing membership. “An LNP Government will commit $100,000 towards the construction of a new building for the Marlin Coast Men’s Shed to allow expansion to help more locals,” he said.
