Far North boxer and ballers in punishing form
TABLELANDS boxer Mick “the Weapon” Perks claimed an Australian title late last month.
Perks, who fights out of the Yungaburra Boxing Team, met fellow Queenslander Terence Rooney in the final of the Intermediate Heavyweight title bout, held at the Shoppingtown Hotel, Doncaster, Melbourne.
The National Amateur Championships were held over three nights. Perks forced Rooney against the ropes and unleashed, scoring with dynamite hooks and body shots.
Queensland scored well on the medal tally, only losing out to NSW, the winners by two silver medals across the tournament.
■ DEBA George’s class, and the athleticism of Tobiasz Hose and Deola D’Brown – rarely seen at Darwin Basketball Championship level – had the crowd gasping in wonder in the Championship grand final on Saturday. It allowed Essington to triumph 100 to 81 over Uni Rebels in the Cannons’ first season in the league.
George finished the night with 35 points, while D’Brown (33 points) and Hose (12) provided excellent support as Essington notched up its thirdstraight win over Uni.
■ MAREEBA’S Aron Baynes and his Boston Celtics teammates just keep on rolling.
Star Celtic Kyrie Irving had a key three-pointer and a driving basket in the closing two minutes, helping Boston hold off the Phoenix Suns for a 116-111 victory on Sunday.
Baynes played 18 minutes and grabbed six rebounds.
■ FORMER Cairns Dolphin Cayla George bagged 14 points as she led the Townsville Fire back into the winners’ circle against their old nemesis, the Sydney Uni Flames.
Townsville levelled the series with a 88-85 thriller in Sydney on Saturday.
George was named in the Australian Opals squad last week.
