YAPS working hard handling adoptions

- JANESSA EKERT janessa.ekert@news.com.au

JELLY Beans and Theoden have found their forever homes.

They were among the seven dogs and seven cats to be adopted out by the Young Animal Protection Society since Saturday.

YAPS manager Carol Clifton said, after the Cairns Post published a story on the 33 cats and 45 dogs under their care, the centre had been very busy.

“It makes people aware and reminds them that we’re here,” Ms Clifton said.

However, there are now more than 100 animals needing homes after the addition of multiple litters of puppies bolstered numbers.

“Nine puppies were vaccinated today,” Ms Clifton said yesterday.

“They can go up for adoption over the weekend, but they are still too young. We’ll hang on to them for another week or two.”

Another four puppies were brought in yesterday, while Ms Clifton said seven more were still with foster car- ers because of their young age.

YAPS would also split the care of yet another litter.

“All these animals are in here because people didn’t want to or didn’t desex their dogs,” she said.

There is a waiting list of people wanting to drop animals off.

But there are endings.

Just yesterday YAPS adopted out a dog that had been under the care of the centre for two years.

“He’s been adopted before and then came back to us … fingers crossed this time,” Ms Clifton said.

She pushed the importance for people adopting to take their dogs to obedience school.

“It’s very easy when they’re cute little puppies … suddenly they are chewing everything and it’s too hard,” Ms Clifton said.

“If you don’t nip it in the bud when they are young, it’s going to continue.” still happy
