Sharon wants to spread the joy of sunflowers

- ANDREA FALVO

FOR Cairns resident Sharon Hsu, Freshwater’s field of sunflowers is her favourite place in the city.

So much so that she recently moved to the suburb with her partner to enjoy the bright blossoms more often.

“I was experiencing some bad times last October and they made me feel better,” she said. “I just love the flowers under the mountains ... I love mountains too.

When farmer Mark Savina’s sunflowers remerged earlier this month, Ms Hsu said she was thrilled.

“After four months of house hunting we moved ... we now live a five-minute walk to the field,” she said.

“We were living on the Esplanade but it’s much better out here.

“I’ve basically been there every week, I drive past after work. I also bring all my friends here and from the office.”

Ms Hsu encouraged anyone who hasn’t yet visited the sunflower field to stop by.

“Come here as early as you can, maybe about 8am,” she said. “The flowers are much higher than last year too, some of them are taller than me. everyone

“But people keep picking them and I’m a bit cranky about that.

“I encourage people to not pick them and just leave them for others to enjoy.”

Mr Savina has revealed that once the sunflowers die out about mid-May he would use the paddock for sugarcane.
