Park to get Jashar name
A PROPOSAL to rename an Edmonton park after a local pioneering family has been backed by Cairns Regional Council’s sport and community services committee.
The Nindi Close Park is in line to be renamed Jashar Park, after the family of the same name.
The Jashar family was instrumental in the early development of Edmonton, having migrated to the area from Europe in 1928 and established a sugar cane farm at Thomson Rd.
Brothers Sadik (known as Sam) and Hiqmet (Eric) Jashar contributed to the Edmonton community through a range of volunteer work, funding and donations.
They built the original Stoney Creek Bridge and assisted with the building of the Edmonton Pool, Bowls Club and St Theresa’s School.
The proposal to rename the park has been supported by members of other longstanding Edmonton families.
