Traditiona­l owners know the importance of crocodiles in our waterways to prevent sharks from over running. They understand the importance of bats to flourish our rainforest. Obsolete library could easily inal owners, but us in the community.

Check with the Cairns Regional Council for figures as to just how much.

Those who own these unmanaged animals apparently have no thoughts for the welfare of other native animals or for the abandoned pet itself.

As a society we must get serious about this growing problem and as humans must consider putting these stray or wandering animals to sleep forever.

It sounds harsh, but the reality is we are humans and they are animals. End of story.

I feel sure these animals will be a lot happier in pet heaven where they will be fed and nurtured more than they were here on earth. Patrick Hopper, Mt Sheridan
