Swim legend is ‘best man’ at wedding expo

- ALICIA NALLY

FORMER Olympian Ian Thorpe (left) gave the Love On The Inlet wedding festival a tick of approval in a best man-type speech.

Addressing an audience of couples planning their own big day in paradise, the swimming legend shared his memories of the Far North.

“Thank you for having me here. It’s nice to be back in Cairns. I was trying to think when the last time I was here and actually stayed here. I was here six months ago but I went up the road,” he said. “I remember I had a training camp here, which is the last time I spent some decent time.”

The gold medallist was at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal to announce the result of a competition to win a tropical wedding.

“It’s a pleasure to be here and exciting to be able to be a part of tonight,” he said.

He thanked the sponsors involved in the $60,000 wedding package.

“It is an incredible prize and I know that all these businesses have felt very passionately about giving all couples their dream day,” he said.

THE winners of a luxury, tropical wedding package for same-sex couples are going to struggle to keep their guest list to just 50 people.

But that is the rule imposed on Scott Forbes and Chris Marks after judges deemed a 90-second video of their love story the best of 19 entries.

Former Olympian Ian Thorpe announced the outcome at the Love on the Inlet wedding expo at Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal last night.

Mr Forbes, from Brisbane, and Mr Marks, from Melbourne, have sustained a long distance relationship for almost a year.

“This is so much more than a prize for us, it’s a dream come true,” Mr Marks said.

Mr Forbes said: “It’s been an incredible adventure, albeit an expensive one, so without a competition like this marriage really wouldn’t be a financial possibility for us.”
