“My girlfriend is over there at the moment and I’ve just finished my apprenticeship and I thought I wanted to do something else and travel and go play football and that has been one of my main goals, to go and play football in as many places as possible,” he said.

“I’m at that age now where I feel I need to get out and experience other things and eventually maybe come back.

“I thought why not, football is growing over there and there’s an opportunity for me.

“I’m going to be over there against players 17 and 18 and me going over at 22, I’ll be a bit older, spend a couple of years and if all goes well get drafted to Division 1 or have a chance at MLS, too.”

Wilson will be looking to take some momentum from the end of the season with Cairns FC straight into the US football season.

“Basically I’ll be going from the end of this season straight into the start of their season, so I sort of want to carry the momentum from this season over there,” he said.

“I obviously want to leave here in the best possible way and help young Jacson and any other ‘keepers coming through to set that path and help the team get to where they want to be.”

The shotstopper will be hoping to bottle up some warm weather with him, too, in the unfamiliar location.

“All I know is it’s gets to about minus-30, it’s got a lot of lakes and it’s smaller than Cairns,” Wilson said.

After a weekend off, Cairns FC host South West Queensland Thunder at Barlow Park on Saturday.
