Woman on shoe charges

A CAIRNS woman has landed herself in court on an armed assault charge after she attacked a former friend with a high heel shoe.

Following a falling out with the victim, Akon Deng Akoy Ajow and three others arrived at the woman’s Bungalow home on January 29 last year.

Crown prosecutor Eddie Coker said that, while the others argued with the woman’s housemate, Ajow picked up a “black heeled shoe” and hit the 45-year-old woman across the head a number of times.

The 57-year-old pleaded guilty in the Cairns District Court to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed with an offensive instrument and breaching a no contact order.

Defence barrister James Sheridan said Akon, a mother of seven, grew up in Sudan during the periods of unrest.

She came to Australia for a better life in 2006.

The court was told her offending was at the lower end of seriousness for that type of offence. “She didn’t go there armed ... (it) highlights a heat of the moment reaction from her,” Mr Sheridan said.

Judge Dean Morzone berated her serious behaviour.

“All of this occurred while she should have been entitled ... to the safety and haven of her own home,” Judge Morzone said.

“It is not the way in our society, which has embraced you and your family. It’s a society where safety is paramount and the home is sacred.”

Ajow was placed on a $1000 12-month good behaviour bond. A conviction was not recorded.

THE Far Northern faction of Mama Tribe is celebrating the support network’s first birthday in style today.

Cairns Mama Tribe ambassador Rachel Prince said the local group attracted 1200 members in just 12 months.

“This is a group all about facilitating getting mums together, rather than a group that focuses on the babies,” she said. “We hear lots of stories about mums needing to meet people, so we try to have a variety of different activities so everybody can come along.”

Today’s celebration will include games for the kids and a raffle with all proceeds raised going straight to the Centre of Perinatal Excellence.

The theme of the birthday celebration is a flower crown picnic, with mums encouraged to bring along some food to share and to wear a flower crown.

The event kicks off at 1pm at the Funship Playground at the Cairns Esplanade.
