The massive sprintcar event will result in 410 cars returning to the track for the first time in years.

It has been five years since sprintcars last visited the tropical Far North Queensland track – the opening round of the East Coast Series in the 2013-14 season. But organisers say the Cairns International Speedway is more than ready to welcome them back for what is gearing up to be an exciting event.

A strong field of drivers will be battling it out for top Thunder in the Canebowl honours from tonight but it will be newly crowned Archerfield Speedway Track Champion Andrew Scheuerle from the Gold Coast who will be leading the charge.

Dougherty and Howell are expected to be the main men for the Far North drivers, while Kris Jennings, Andrew Corbet, Tony Wynne and Garry Finglas are also among the nominations.

“It’s a fantastic list of drivers who have nominated for the Thunder in the Canebowl and we have no doubt that the event is going to produce some thrilling racing for the spectators,” said Cairns International Speedway president Howell.

“The event itself wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support that we’ve had from our valued sponsors and the local community, so on behalf of Cairns International Speedway, I have to say a big thank you to everyone who’s helped us to bring the Thunder in the Canebowl to life.”

Each night of racing will be a stand-alone event, featuring three rounds of heat races and a feature race, with racing to start at 6pm tonight and 3pm tomorrow afternoon.

The program will also feature Formula 500s, Modified Sedans, Cairns Outlaws, Dirt Karts, National 4s and Junior Formula 500s.
