Robbery suspect caught

A DRAMATIC overnight police search for an alleged armed robber ended under a bush in an Aeroglen front yard yesterday.

The 27-year-old man, wanted on a return to prison warrant, a slew of robbery and property offences and allegedly connected with a home invasion at Flying Fish Point last month, unexpectedly rode a pushbike near patrolling officers near Palmerston Street.

“A search and foot chase resulted in his apprehension,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ed Kinbacher of Cairns CIB said.

He said Palmerston residents told police which way the fleeing suspect had run.

“This assisted police in apprehending him in someone’s front yard, under a bush,” Det Snr Sgt Kinbacher said.

“He rode a pushbike towards us without a shirt and we recognised him from his very obvious tattoos, one is a banner across his chest,” Det Snr Sgt Kinbacher said.

“Maybe he thought the tattoos were less obvious.

“It was an act of desperation on his part – he lost his car and his mode of transport.”

The manhunt began on Reservoir Road in Brinsmead on Wednesday night when police intercepted the man’s vehicle, which crashed near Glenoma Park.

The suspect ran from the car, leaving his passenger.

“During the course of a search of the vehicle there was a firearm located,” Det Snr Sgt Kinbacher said.

“There were concerns about safety.”

The suspect is in custody. significant community
