Roosters’ streak ends
THE Atherton Roosters first grade’s 10-match winning streak came to end at Mossman Showgrounds on Saturday night. The Mossman Sharks got the better of their opponents 30-18 in an exciting match. After leading 12-10 at the break, the Roosters pushed ahead 18-10 early in the second half. But Mossman hit back with four unanswered tries. The loss means the Roosters have surrendered their top spot on the Cairns and District Rugby League table, slipping back to second position, one point behind Cairns Brothers. Mossman won reserve grade over the Roosters 34-8 with Ty Grogan scoring two tries. This Saturday, the Atherton Roosters do battle with the Yarrabah Seahawks on home turf at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.
Sailing clean sweep
TALENTED sailing siblings Travis and Breanne Wadley spent their school holidays doing what they always do — sailing in a regatta. It was another convincing overall win for Travis at the Queensland state titles held out of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Brisbane. Travis blitzed the field, winning all nine races at the regatta. He has backed up some fantastic wins from the Australian nationals, New Zealand nationals and Victorian state titles in recent months.
Out of the rough
ATHERTON Golf Club is impressed with the progress it has made since appointing the husband-and-wife management team of Kylie and Brendan Clark earlier this year. Mrs Clark is the new manager and Mr Clark the course superintendent. Their business skills have already meant both savings and improvements to the club. They recently bought three new lawnmowers and a designated spray unit under a rental lease arrangement.
Sprintcars return
The 410 Sprintcars’ return to Cairns International Speedway went off with a with a bang during last Friday and Saturday night’s Thunder in the Canebowl event, with the two-man Ausdeck Racing team ultimately achieving top honours on both nights. With Sprintcars not having visited the track in half a decade, there was much for speedway fans to be excited about.
