Helping keep kids safe

ANITA Coulthard remembers the panic that gripped her when she lost her parents at the Sydney Royal Easter Show when she was seven years old.

The White Rock grandmother said it was a memory she would never forget.

She said that was why she was an advocate for all children stopping at the police booth at the Cairns Show to get a free wristband to write their parents’ phone numbers on.

“I’m 65 now and if they had these wristbands I would have found my mother earlier,” she said. “Every grandmother wants to keep their grandchild and their children safe, whether they’re five or 105.”

Her 10-year-old grandShe our band teacher gave us. I’ll probably be back next year to perform again.”

Trinity Bay State High School and Cairns State High School will both perform at the Cairns Show tonight from 7.30pm before the fireworks finale at 9pm. daughter Maddy Coulthard is visiting from Perth and went to the Cairns Show for the very first time this year.

said having spoken with the police and getting a wristband made her feel a lot more secure in the big crowd.

“Wearing this wristband makes me feel a bit safer at the show,” she said.

“I also got a sticker and a bracelet. I like collecting things like these.”

Cairns Police recommends families head straight to the Police Office at the base of the grandstand or the Police Crime Prevention Display in the Fred Moule Pavilion to collect a free wristband.

Police have also advised all those driving to the show to take all valuables out of their cars and to make sure their cars are locked.
