San Amaro ‘a carnival contender’

- JORDAN GERRANS

TOLGA trainer Roy Chillemi thinks San Amaro could be a Cairns Newmarket contender after a sharp return to form at Cannon Park on Tuesday.

After a disappointing run last start at Oak Park, San Amaro bolted in on Tuesday afternoon over 1400m.

Wanderson D’Avila shot him to the head of the field and he never looked back.

With the Cairns Newmarket to be run on the first day of the upcoming Cairns Cup Carnival, the veteran trainer said one more run before then should set the bay gelding up nicely.

“You would have to set your sights on the Newmarket,” Chillemi said. “I would not say he is a certainty to win but he would be a certain contender.

“Hopefully we can get one more run in but he is a horse that we do not have to do that. He is a clean-winded horse.”

The six-year-old has now won seven races from 33 starts, with three career wins coming in his last six runs.

“His form before his last run at Oak Park was good. He has won here at Cairns before,” Chillemi said.

“He won a good race in Townsville the other day but he did not like Oak Park for some reason.”

D’Avila scored an early double on Tuesday, riding two of the first four winners on the eight-race card.

The Cairns Cup Carnival will run from August 4-11.

Sunshine Coast-based trainer Krystle Johnston and the consistent Craiglea Deken claimed the Cairns Newmarket last year.
