Roughead faces six options: Clarko

It’s raining goals and Kreeck’s flowing

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson says Jarryd Roughead has “six options in front of him” as he considers his future beyond this year.

The Hawks’ captain and four-time premiership player is contracted for 2019 but has had the same conversation with Clarkson as Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis and Luke Hodge, who all decided to finish their careers at other clubs.

“He’s just like Sam and Jordan two years ago. He’s contracted and he’s got the choice,” Clarkson Footy’s AFL360.

“We’ve had exactly the same conversation with him in the last six weeks as what I had with Jordan and Sam. Rough’s got about six options in front of him. One is not to play at all, another is to go to another club and do what Sam and those guys have done, another is to stay at Hawthorn and another is if he stays at Hawthorn what does that look like for him? Is it in a sort of assistant coachingtype (role).

“Where is his future? We’re talking about … what’s it look told Fox like for the next six years, not just what does it look like for the next 12 months. We’ve had that discussion and I think it’s more likely that he’ll stay at the Hawks.”

Roughead, 31, said given what the club had done with Mitchell, Lewis and Hodge he had to expect the questions about whether he too could finish playing at another club.

“I’m pretty lucky. I’ve had Clarko for 14 years,” Roughead told Channel 7.

“Clarko and I are great friends so we have chats all the time in regards to form on the weekend, team structure, what happens next year. So yeah, we’ve had discussions about it.

“It’s probably a unique situation because no other club has done this and when it comes to any one of us in the later parts of our career I guess we’re going to get asked the question.

“For me it’s not one that I’m thinking about now because in 10 days’ time we’ve got arguably the biggest game of our season coming up.”

Roughead has played 273 games for the Hawks since debuting in 2005. STAR: Ezekial Wilson.
