Farmers in tribute to truck crash pair
TABLELANDS farmers paused for a moment’s silence as a mark of respect to two truck drivers killed in a headon crash on the Kennedy Hwy.
FNQ Growers president Joe Moro said the crowd paid tribute to the men’s families during the organisation’s annual gala dinner in Mareeba on Friday night.
“It’s been a shock to everyone in Mareeba,” he said.
“In the horticulture industry, we use trucks on a regular basis so it really hit home.
“Seeing a person lose their life and not be able to go home to their family, it’s tragic.”
Innisfail man Chris Kurz has been identified as one of the drivers.
The identity of the other man, also behind the wheel of a Blenner’s Transport truck, has not yet been made public.
Mr Moro said the deaths had steeled the region’s resolve to get road upgrades beyond just the Kuranda Range.
“We need more passing lanes on the road between Mareeba and Kuranda itself,” he said.
“What happened last week was a tragedy but there have been a number of other accidents as well.”
Police are calling for witnesses to Thursday’s crash or anybody with relevant dashcam footage or information to contact the Cairns Forensic Crash Unit on 4030 7174.
