Pride knocked out
NORTHERN Pride coach David Scott says his players should hold their heads up high after losing to Townsville in Saturday’s Hastings Deering Colts preliminary final.
The under-20s led 22-4 after 19 minutes but did not score again for the rest of the match, losing 26-22.
“It was a disappointing finish but I couldn’t fault the boys’ effort,” Scott said.
“They did everything I asked. We just didn’t have enough of the ball in the second half and got fatigued.”
Evan Child was superb for the Pride, scoring two tries and was solid in defence in the No.7 jersey, filling in for the injured Jack Campagnolo.
A lopsided penalty count in the second half helped the Blackhawks get back into the game as they scored four unanswered tries to claim victory.
Blackhawks coach David Tangata-Toa said he felt confident going into the break that his side could win if they could get a fair share of possession.
“The Pride started the game really strongly and we struggled to go with them at the start; we didn’t have a whole lot of ball,” Tangata-Toa said.

“I spoke to them at halftime and said to them if we can get our hands on the ball and defend a bit better than what we’ve been doing, we’d get the result that we wanted.
“We sort of knew after we scored our second try they’d only tackled us 16 times, so it showed that we didn’t have a whole lot of ball in that first half and we could still put 10 points on them,” Tangata-Toa said.
Scott said there were plenty of reasons to look forward to the 2019 season.
“Some of our younger players really improved this year and another pre-season under their belts will make a big difference,” he said.
The Blackhawks will play Norths Devils in the Hastings Deering Colts grand final this Sunday at Suncorp Stadium.
