Student wins silver

ST AIDAN’S Anglican Girls’ School student Shelbee Welsh claimed a silver medal in the 15 years age group at the recent Queensland School Sports Track and Field State Titles at QSAC. Welsh, coached by St Aidan’s teacher and world class jumper Nik Bojic, snared the podium finish in high jump. Welsh’s 1.69m qualified her to attend the All Schools National Titles in Cairns next month. “That is a new personal best for her as well,’’ Bojic said. Bojic said Welsh’s performanc­e was extraordin­ary because she was also a strong distance runner.

New AFL program

AFL Queensland, in conjunctio­n with the Gold Coast Suns and their respective zones, have announced new changes to the structure of the under-16 talent programs in 2019 into a new four phase program. The changes come as a result of a concerted effort to streamline the program to better ensure under16 males across the state are afforded the best developmen­t at all levels. Under the new four phase program, the Suns will be responsibl­e for developing the overall coaching and training program with AFL Queensland regional offices responsibl­e for the weekly program operations with coaching staff to be jointly appointed within their geographic academy zone. The North Queensland Regions program commences with a selection process this month followed by a 15-week training and developmen­t program. Regional training bases will be in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampto­n. This phase will culminate with the Suns Academy North Queensland Championsh­ips in March.

Summer Sixes back

MAREEBA United Football Club’s express summer sixes is back on this Friday night — November 9. Juniors start from 6pm and run until 6.45pm. Seniors commence from 7pm.

Vic coach for CTB

AFL Cairns club Centrals Trinity Beach have secured a Victorianb­ased coach in principle for the 2019 season. The candidate is set to travel to the Far North next weekend to meet the Bulldogs hierarchy before signing to coach at Crathern Park for next year. The new coach will replace Mick Seymour, who has led the Bulldogs for the last two campaigns.
