Did we vote for that?
THE latest Melbourne terrorist attack (CP, 13/11) has sparked a discussion about immigration.
Some commenters say Sydney and Melbourne have reached capacity. They’re full.
Nonetheless, neither side has plans to reduce the immigration rate. Why is that?
It’s down to “gross” in “gross domestic product”. Immigrants are the “consumption units” required for “growth”
Without evermore consumption units the illusion of growth cannot be maintained.
Without growth there’s “recession” – which triggers terror in politicians.
Recession reduces asset prices which upsets wealthy donors and gifts gotcha moments to the populist media.
To avoid recession, growth is being funded by ever-increasing borrowings.
Yep, we’re borrowing to pay the running costs of immigrants so that house prices stay high. Never mind the infrastructure that we can’t afford to build to meet growth’s needs.
Does anyone recall voting for that? How did it become a plank of all the major party’s platforms?
