Johannsens an eagle-eyed golfing couple

MATT Spilsbury (75 gross), Gordon Perry (71 nett) and Georgia Buckle (68 nett) may have taken out the individual honours at the Cairns Golf Club’s Monthly Medal but the hole of the day belonged to Jane Johannsen.

The Cairns Golf Club women’s captain made an eagle on the course’s par-five 15th hole – a huge effort for someone playing off a 21 handicap.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing either – after hitting a “reasonable tee shot”, Jane Johannsen’s second veered to the left.

“It wasn’t quite behind a tree, but the trees were in the way for the third shot.

“I used my rescue club, which I hadn’t used for about six months because it usually doesn’t go straight.

“I put it on the green and it rolled in (to the hole).”

She took a swing, and followed her ball for as long as she could until the trees obscured her view.

“I didn’t know where it ended up – I was just happy that it had gone straight and towards the green,” she said.

“One of the girls said she saw the ball go into the hole, but I didn’t believe her until I got up there and was looking around.”

Jane’s three-shot triumph comes just weeks after husband Colin also recorded an eagle of his own, after making an ace on Cairns Golf Club’s par-three 11th.

“It was a hole-in-one that was also an eagle for me, and now Jane’s followed it up with an eagle on the par-five 15th,” Colin said.

Cairns Golf Club member David Wood said Jane’s eagle was an impressive achievement.

“Wow – that’s a hell of a hole,” he said.

“It’s a very, very long parfour for the men, but it’s probably one of my favourites.”

“You’ve nearly always got the wind behind you and if you unleash and get a decent shot down past the trees, you can get on (the green) in two and perhaps be very lucky to get it in the hole in three, which would be a birdie for the guys.

“But an eagle on the 15th for the ladies – that is outstanding.”
