Lend an ear to veterans

- NICK DALTON

MATES4MATES is encouraging Australians to reach out to veterans and their families who are struggling in the festive season and offer support.

The holiday period can trigger feelings of distress for veterans affected by mental health issues, or for those who have suffered loss.

Mates4Mates psychological services manager Georgia Ash said seasons that were filled with joy for many, could be stressful and lonely for others.

“It’s estimated that one in five ex-serving Australian Defence Force members will experience a mental health issue within 12 months after discharging, with many also experiencing mental health issues later in life,” she said.

“During the holiday season mental illness symptoms can be triggered as there is often the expectation that everyone should be happy, festive, and focused on spending.

“With many also facing financial pressures, family conflict or bereavement – feelings of loneliness and isolation, depression or anxiety, nervousness, irritability or even anger can arise.

“We can all play a part in making the festive season that little bit easier for those who are struggling. Check in on your loved ones, friends, neighbours and colleagues and offer your support.”

For 24-hour support over the holidays, veterans and their families can phone Open Arms on 1800 011 046 or Lifeline on 13 11 14. Visit mates4mates.org to find out more or call 1300 4 Mates.
