WATCHING her dog struggle with grief and loneliness has led a Babinda resident to start a unique pet group in the town.

Emina Serifovic will host the first Dogs of Babinda meetup on January 5 from 6-9am at the back oval of the town’s football field.

She said she had received some interest just days after starting the Facebook group.

“We’ve always had two dogs and we recently lost one but we didn’t want to introduce a new dog with a newborn,” Ms Serifovic said. “But our german shepherd Kai developed anxiety and stress, he started chasing his tail and became a bit protective of my son and me while we were walking especially if he saw other dogs.

“I thought it’d be good if we had a regular time to meet up with other dogs so they could play in a positive way.

“There are no dog enclosures here, so it would be really good if we could have somewhere to meet.” Ms Serifovic said Babinda was a great place to have dogs.

“Our dog is quite well known in our street. He has been able to get out a few times, and people know where he lives and put him back and we've done the same. It’s a good community for that,” she said.

Ms Serifovic said anyone wishing to attend the first Dogs of Babinda event should bring their dogs on a lead, a fetch toy or some treats.

She also welcomed anyone with knowledge or experience in dog socialising and behavioural training. “I want to do this on a weekly basis on a Saturday or Sunday and see what works for everyone. Maybe 6am or 7am before it gets too hot,” Ms Serifovic said.
