Young batting star shines at state titles

- ROWAN SPARKES

ROVERS Cricket Club’s teenage batting sensation Finn Churchward is taking his dazzling Cricket Far North form to the state stage.

Churchward was one of six Far North players to earn selection in the Northern Flames under-15s representative team alongside Mulgrave’s Shaun Henrich, Tully’s Christo van Vuuren and a trio of United players in Matthew Wilkins, Jacob Mahar and Tasman Eaton.

The boys are on the Sunshine Coast this week for the Queensland Cricket Under-15s Male State Challenge and kicked off their campaign yesterday when they were defeated by Metro South West at Kerry Emery Oval.

Churchward was unbeaten in his opening stand for the Flames, scoring 34 off 69 deliveries, and looked poised to post more runs before being run out.

The Flames will look to bounce back against the Western Swelter at John Blanck Oval today, before returning to Kerry Emery Oval to take on Brisbane North tomorrow, ahead of Thursday’s state championships finals.

Churchward has been a revelation with the bat in the 2018/19 Cricket Far North season and is the under-15s competition’s leading run scorer with a total of 403 runs.

Opening the batting for Rovers under-15s team on six occasions, Churchward has scored one 100, three 50s and only given up his wicket twice.

The Cricket Far North under-15s competition gets back underway in the new year on January 18-19 with a round of T20 matches.
