Woman in court for giving mum pot

-

A CAIRNS nursing student was given a slap on the wrist and a lecture for mailing her mother cannabis to ease postop pain.

Georgia Elizabeth Moon, 21, last month posted the pot to her family’s Kirwan address as her mother was recovering from tendon surgery.

Cairns Magistrates’ Court on Monday heard post office employees were alerted by the package’s pungent odour and called police, who found 21gm of cannabis in a clip seal bag and wrapped in a shirt.

“Because her mother was in pain, one of her friends said ‘why don’t you try this,’ defending solicitor Linda Cho said.

Moon pleaded guilty to providing a dangerous drug.

“It seems that without a great deal of thought you sent the cannabis to your mother,” acting Magistrate Scott Luxton said. “It was foolish and reckless on your part. Whatever professional aspect, you have to understand the consequence of this behaviour.”

He sentenced Moon to a nine-month good behaviour order and did not record a conviction. “It would be best to allow you to continue your studies unimpeded,” he said.

Medicinal cannabis is legal in Queensland for selected ailments but is prohibitively expensive as it is not approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

One Western Australian family is paying more than $400 for a 25ml bottle of cannabis oil for their 13-year-old son, Caleb, to treat seizures.

One bottle lasts the family four days.

Greens Senator for Queensland Larissa Waters last month called for Australia to legalise the drug.
