Ladies first as Nacho and Billy left in the sand

- MATTHEW BENNS

RUGBY League legend Billy Slater and Argentinian polo star Nacho Figueras headlined a posse of riding royalty thundering along the beach and through the surf on the Gold Coast early yesterday.

But what has become a highly publicised bromance between the two sports stars at this year’s Magic Millions Carnival was overshadowed by Nacho’s businesswoman wife Delfina Blaquier beating both down the shoreline.

“I had to give Billy a bit of a head start,” Nacho joked. “I don’t know if you saw me but I was coming along at the back.”

Delfina had a different explanation for her turbocharged performance at the head of the pack: “They were sleeping.”

The trio was joined by a roll call of Australia’s top jockeys, including Tommy Berry, Kathy O’Hara, Corey Brown and pack leader Winona Costin, for the ride ahead of the barrier draw for Saturday’s $10 million Magic Millions race day.

The ride along the beach is the showpiece for the launch of The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sales which start today.

Magic Millions co-owner Katie Page said: “Every year it gets bigger.

“When we started this we had two horses riding along the beach and now we have 22.” • • • • Kids tr-vel & e-t FREE Return Tr-nsfers from C-irns BBQ Buffet lunch -t Foxy’s Entert-inment, give-w-ys & -ctivities • $99 per Adult 1x FREE child (4-1ƒ ye-rs old) per -dult • Book online at www.fitzroyisl-nd.com/-ustr-liPh: 07 4044 6700 | E: st-yŠfitzroyisl-nd.com
