Medico off on Oxford scholarship
A FORMER Cairns man passionate about health has the world at his fingertips after being selected to study in England over the next two years.
Daniel D’Hotman moved to Melbourne after graduating from St Augustine’s College in 2011, motivated to study medicine after work experience with various doctors throughout the Cairns region.
Despite recently graduating from Monash University in Melbourne with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Hons), the 25-year-old isn’t ready to put down the books just yet.
He is one of just nine students across Australia to be awarded a 2019 Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford.
He will make the move to England in September to study a Masters in public policy and a Masters in social data science over two years.
“Being from Cairns, it’s not something you hear about very much … but it’s not like if you come from regional Queensland you can’t win a Rhodes Scholarship,” Dr D’Hotman said.
“If you’re ambitious and you want to do big things, you can if that’s what you put your mind to.”
Following his studies at Oxford, he hopes to gain some experience working in the United Kingdom before returning to Australia.
“The space I’m really interested in is the use of technology in health systems and how you can make hospitals more efficient,” he said.
“In the UK they’re doing things to see how they can innovate to improve outcomes and save money.
“So I think it would be good to work there and learn what I can from their system before coming back …
“It’s a really interesting area and there’s a number of exciting developments on the horizon.”
Dr D’Hotman’s long list of achievements also include a Bachelor of Medical Science from the University of Oxford, a Graduate Diploma in Economics from the London School of Economics, a Boston Consulting Group scholarship for his exceptional academic results and experience as an expedition medic on a 2017 trek to the South Pole.
