Gourmet eatery to target lunchtime crowds

- PETER CARRUTHERS

A NEW lunch spot in the heart of Cairns is delivering quality meals on the go made in-house from fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

The Alley Eatery in the Main Street Arcade between Lake and Grafton streets began trading on Tuesday.

The business is the creation of Troy and Kellie Vickers.

Ms Vickers has a background in accounting and Mr Vickers has worked in restaurants as a chef for 30 years.

“We are doing gourmet wraps and Turkish bread, baked goods from locally sourced produce,” Ms Vickers said.

“Jams, chutneys, onion jams, and relishes are all made here in the shop,” Mr Vickers said.

Opening a little before the lunchtime crowd hits the street, The Alley Eatery will also appeal to the coffee crowd with good espresso cakes and biscuits.

Mr Vickers said he had worked most of his life in the food industry, working for other people and the new business offered a chance to be his own boss and do his own thing.

The couple had been looking for the perfect shopfront from which to run their dream business and felt the small shop with good exposure to passing foot traffic in the Main Street Arcade was a perfect fit.

“We have done all the numbers and have just jumped at this opportunity,” Ms Vickers said.

The couple said the business complemented the other food-based traders in the arcade but offered a product unique enough to create their own customer base.
