WITH the school holidays over the halfway mark parents are scrambling to get the kids out of the house and into any activity to keep them busy.

Every Wednesday in January the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum at Smithfield will open hatches of tanks, turrets and personnel carriers for inquisitive young war buffs.

Former tank commander Jason Belgrave gives an informative guided tour of the decommissioned war machines and where possible starts and operates a range of rare and unique vehicles.

Also in the Smithfield area is sand sculpture making workshops run at the Smithfield Shopping Centre. From the January 11 to 25 the workshops run at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm.

Bookings are a must and can be made by calling 4038 9312 or in person at the customer service desk.

For those wet days Cairns Regional Council is offering a free online movie streaming service to all Cairns Libraries members.

The service offers hundreds of movies, documentaries and children’s programs.

They are available for library members to stream to their own device free-of -charge.

The White Wizard and his Puppet Show is sure to keep the younger kids entertained at the Mount Sheridan Plaza shopping centre.

There are three daily shows at 10am, 11am and 1pm until January 18.

Why not get the kids on the water sailing at the Cairns Yacht Club each Friday from 4-6pm. Or something a bit different find out what the animals of the Cairns Aquarium get up to after dark by taking part in the Sleep with the Sharks on January 12.
