Australia in the frame
WHAT Australia means to people is the theme of an exhibition being launched tonight at Mission Beach.
The Mission Arts’ Australia Exhibition features 27 works from 16 artists in a variety of mediums including oil and acrylic paintings, pottery, metalwork and others.
Mission Arts president Cate Heys said the aim was to showcase works that invoked and inspired a response to the people, the places and the country in which we all live and create in.
“There’s a big mixture of work reflecting the diversity of the culture and landscape,” she said.
“Australia Day is coming up and we wanted an exhibition appropriate for this time of year.
“There will be tropical landscapes, Outback landscapes, paintings of elders and more abstracts works on display.”
Mission Arts member Bruce Parry has entered three works in the exhibition, inspired by a recent road trip to Canberra along the inland route.
“Most of the time I paint tropical landscapes inspired by living in Mission Beach, but for this exhibition, I wanted to capture the Outback that everyone thinks of,” he said.
“It was the first thing I’d thought of when I heard the theme. We’d just come back from this road trip and were amazed going from the greenery of the coast to the breathtaking barren landscapes of the inland country.
The exhibition opens tonight, 6-8pm, with the opportunity to view the exhibition and enjoy drinks and nibbles.
Mission Arts will be running art workshops on Australia Day and the gallery will be open for viewing.
The Australia exhibition at the Mission Beach Community Centre closes on February 13. The centre will close for two weeks for cleaning and maintenance, reopening on March 2 with the photography exhibition Focus.
Mission Arts is open every day from 10am to 2pm with the opportunity to browse the shop and view the exhibition.
Entry is free. Gold coin donations are invited.
