Police nab slippery visitor

- ANDREA FALVO

FAR North police are reminding people to be aware of snakes this wet season, after making a slippery discovery while conducting nightly patrols in Cairns.

Officers from the Tactical Crime Squad, operating in conjunction with the Greater Cairns Task Force, had their work cut out for them when they came across an unlikely character causing a scene in Manoora on Thursday night.

Constables Dale Jeppesen and Will Taylor were turning onto Patula Street when they saw about 20 teenagers and adults in the street screaming.

They quickly ran from their police vehicle when they noticed it was a 2m scrub python cruising around enjoying the warm, humid night.

Constable Taylor identified the snake and assured everyone the python was a harmless local before releasing it to a safe place in the nearby scrub.

Constable Jeppesen said it was a great result all-round and the locals were happy they removed the snake to a more appropriate place.

“I am sure the snake is happy because now he can continue his nocturnal adventures,” he said.

Far North police said it was typically the time of year where snakes were more active around our community.

If you do come across a reptile, be sure to contact a licensed snake catcher or wildlife rescue organisation.
