CAIRNS SOAKS UP THE HEAT

- ROWAN SPARKES

THE inaugural Cricket Far North President’s Shield had to be postponed on the weekend due to wet weather, but president Peter Huey remains hopeful of the game being played at a later date.

The City v Country contest featuring top players from the local competition was scheduled to open proceedings at Cairns’ first WBBL match at Cazalys Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but was called off after a pitch inspection on Saturday morning.

“It’s to be expected with the weather that was around – we didn’t want to jeopardise the WBBL game,” said Huey.

“It would’ve been absolutely awesome if the weather stayed away.

“I think we would’ve actually had a great crowd to our game as the lead-up.

“The cricket community was really excited about it – they were coming from all over the region to watch it. It’s just a shame the weather put a dampener on it.”

Huey said Cricket Far North would now think about a contingency plan.

“We think it’s a really great concept, even if we maybe look at using it as a trial for our (representative Far North) Fusion side” he said.

“We went to all the trouble of getting a sponsor, uniforms and a shield, so I think we have to do something with it for sure.

“We’ve got Walker Rd (Sporting and Recreation Precinct) as a standalone cricket facility as well, so there’s also the idea of finishing up our season and playing it after the Easter break.”
